I DON’T REMEMBER

I don’t remember why
Within the private den
Of memories!
You planted a kiss lightly
Upon my lips so pale.

Perhaps you could tell me
If you would, mentioning something
That we both could laugh at
A thing that endeared your fancy
And mine!

Tangled in this mystery
I pretend to remember much more than is the case
So that you won’t turn away
With finality, muttering, “What’s the use”
“Of things done together”

“When there is no memory?”
For some reason I cling to you
Though I don’t recall the intimacy
That we shared--- nor where---
I simply don’t remember!
